The Party
Piper Kerman, author of the very popular memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison (the inspiration behind the hit Netflix series), was the featured speaker at the Jewish United Fund’s 2015 Valor fundraiser. The organization’s Young Women’s Board hosted the evening in support of the global and local Jewish community, and raised nearly $90,000 for the nonprofit.
The People
More than 100 women attended the party to hear Kerman’s words of wit and wisdom as she mixed anecdotes about prison life with a serious message about the U.S. justice system. North Shore residents Elissa Goldsmith and Julie Novack chaired the event along with several other women on the board, including Amy Hausman and Katie Taylor.
Best in Show
The Art Center Highland Park was transformed with the signature colors of the night—even the evening’s small bites and sweet treats were themed orange and black. Some of the guests donned their finest prison colors in the spirit of the party, and Kerman—well, understandably, she dressed in chic head-to-toe black without a speck of orange! –Photos by Robert Kusel
