Glow Getter

Dara Levy's Dermaflash brings beautiful skin home.

A SKINCARE TREATMENT that once could only be given by a skilled esthetician with a scalpel is now available to women in their own homes, thanks to Highland Park beauty expert Dara Levy, who invented Dermaflash ($189), a handheld device that exfoliates the skin and removes fine facial hair. Since it launched last year, the response has been remarkable. It’s a hot ticket on QVC, is carried in department stores nationally and is currently a top-selling beauty device at Sephora. We tried Dermaflash for ourselves and found it easy and painless, and it brightened our complexion on the spot.

What’s your beauty background? I owned a med spa on the Gold Coast, and we specialized in dermaplaning. It was the foundation of all our services. We became known as the place where the pros go—celebrities and makeup artists—because you can’t Photoshop peach fuzz, and with high-definition TV, you can’t hide a flaw.

How did you come up with the idea for Dermaflash? I was developing a skincare line, but I couldn’t figure out the magic secret ingredient that would set me apart. One day in the shower, I screamed, ‘Oh, my God, it’s Dermaflash!’ I wanted to bring the experience to all women. From that moment forward, I’ve been laser-focused. I sold my spa and worked for three years to develop the product.

How does it work? Is it like using a razor? This is nothing like shaving. First, you prep the skin with cleanser that brings all the debris to the surface. Dermaflash has a specially created double-sided single-edge blade with a safety cage to protect skin from cuts and abrasions. The vibration helps it glide with no friction.

What results can women expect? Skin cells turn over every 28 days, and they build up, leaving a dull, drab complexion. What makes us look youthful is when light bounces off our skin. After Dermaflash, light refracts, and you have a natural, youthful glow. The experience is transformative.

Once the hair is removed, doesn’t it grow back heavier? That’s an old wives’ tale. Your hair will grow back exactly the same as it was before. [Editor’s Note: We can attest to that; our fuzzy hair grew back soft and fuzzy.]

How’s business? Since Dermaflash launched in January 2016, it’s been a rocket ship. What’s most exciting is that I’ve literally developed a new paradigm in beauty.

What’s next? We’re rolling out to all Nordstrom stores and the rest of Neiman Marcus as we speak. In September, we’ll have endcap displays at Sephora. And I’m going to do an infomercial. It’s the most exciting thing in the world. I’m still in pinch-me mode.
