Dual Concept Design gives a run-of-the-mill home office a serious dose of panache.
A feature wall adds visual interest—and serious warmth—thanks to a 50-inch ventless fireplace with a stunning polished Azul Aran granite three-sided surround. This home office designed by Paulina Cervantes and Andrea Fripp of Dual Concept Design graced the Holiday 2020 cover of NS.
Longtime Glenview residents, this professional couple is playing the long game with their home renovation, moving in stages until it completely reflects their style and taste. When the time came to tackle the husband’s home office, the pair looked to Paulina Cervantes and Andrea Fripp of Dual Concept Design.
Functionality, storage and style were paramount for the husband, who was looking to transform the 250-square-foot space into a transitional version of an English library.
The Dual Concept Design team designed a custom inset armoire with leather-wrapped pocket doors and gave the client’s antique desk a well-deserved face-lift by restaining it, replacing the leather top inserts and replacing all hardware.
“Our biggest challenge was creating a feature wall that didn’t compromise the room’s much-needed storage,” notes Fripp of the project, for which Superior Pad Construction provided framework, electrical, plumbing and painting, with millwork fabricated and installed by Eurocraft. “We achieved this by creating a focal point, incorporating a 50-inch ventless fireplace with a lavish polished three-sided surround in Azul Aran granite. The asymmetric dark walnut shelving design flanking the fireplace was the perfect space for the couple to display their travel possessions, and the leather-wrapped drawers provided that concealed storage they longed for.”
The office’s bar area
It may be a workspace, but with a silver hammered under-mount sink, a polished Azul Aran granite countertop and a panel-ready under-cabinet refrigerator, this office is perfect for playtime too. “Dark walnut floating shelves with an antiqued mirror backsplash became the perfect space for our client to display his collection of fine spirits,” says Cervantes.
Notes Fripp, “Our clients could not be happier with the new space. Before, it was just a space where he came to work. Now he finds himself sitting at his desk, watching TV with the warmth of the fire while enjoying a nice drink.”
