At the annual Celestial Ball, space lovers gathered to celebrate the Adler Planetarium.

THE PARTY More than 700 guests came together for Adler’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the Celestial Ball. The out-of-this-world night was hosted by the Adler Planetarium Women’s Board and featured elegant cocktails, dinner and dancing all under Adler’s breathtaking constellations. THE PEOPLE Astronaut and Lake Forest resident Capt. James A. Lovell Jr. was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating his legacy and dedication to space exploration. Michelle Larson, Adler’s president and CEO, presented the award and touted the achievements of 90-year-old Lovell, who was the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13, command module pilot on Apollo 8 and the first person to go to space four times. THE PINNACLE Partygoers tried their hand at science experiments and took selfies from space, all while raising more than $2 million to inspire exploration and a better understanding of our universe through educational programming and research. -Holly Sias
