The Party
Some 150 guests came out for the inspired Edward Gorey Birthday Bash: Revelry from A to Z, hosted by the Friends of the Loyola University Chicago Libraries and the Loyola University Museum of Art.
The Scene
It was only fitting that on the artist’s actual birthday, guests took part in a private viewing of Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey and G Is for Gorey—C Is for Chicago: The Collection of Thomas Michalak, exhibitions that demonstrate Gorey’s legacy through hundreds of original drawings, works and illustrations. The festive reception featured a cocktail hour, dinner and, of course, birthday cake, as well as a silent auction of rare items donated from the Michalak Edward Gorey Collection.
The Highlights
Student performers from Loyola’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts—dressed in Victorian and Edwardian garb—helped set the “Gorey” mood, and members of the Michael Lerich Orchestra and Gashlycrumb Orphanage provided additional entertainment. The exhibitions will remain on display through June 15 at LUMA in Chicago. –Photos by Bruce Powell
